Long before chocolate became a sweet treat, the Aztec empire used cacao as money. Between 1200 AD and 1500 AD, cacao beans were the primary currency in Mesoamerica, used by the Aztecs and Mayans. A large tomato might cost one bean while a turkey could cost 100 beans. Considered a gift from the gods, cacao held cultural importance.
